Introduction to Immunisation and Vaccinations Training Foundation
Immunisation and Vaccination Foundation
Blended Learning Programme for Primary Care Staff in Lancashire and South Cumbria
The Immunisation and Vaccination Foundation is a comprehensive blended learning programme designed for Primary Care staff who are new to delivering immunisation and vaccination services.
The programme incorporates both all the vaccines included in the routine immunisation schedules as advised by UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). It has been designed to provide delegates with the knowledge, skills and practical competence required to deliver vaccinations safely and effectively.
In line with the UKHSA National Minimum Standards and Core Curriculum for Immunisation Training for Registered Healthcare Practitioners (2025), comprehensive foundation training is required for those new to immunisation. Our programme adopts a blended approach, combining self-directed e-learning, live interactive training, knowledge assessment and supervised competency assessment in practice.
The Programme Consists of Four Parts
- Self-directed e-learning – completion of the relevant e-learning modules available through e-Learning for Healthcare (e-LfH).
- Live interactive online training – a full-day virtual training session delivered via Microsoft Teams.
- Knowledge assessment – completion of a Microsoft Forms assessment, with a required pass mark of 80% or above.
- Practical competency assessment – completion of the competency assessment in practice, supervised and signed off by an appropriately qualified and experienced clinical supervisor.
1. Self-Directed E-Learning
Delegates are required to complete the relevant e-LfH modules before attending the live online training session.
Please ensure that you have allocated sufficient protected time within your working diary to complete the e-learning. Based on feedback from previous delegates, the e-learning takes approximately seven hours to complete.
The programme is free to access; you will simply need to register for an e-LfH account.

Core Modules
All delegates should complete the following core modules:
- Immunology
- Communicating with Patients, Parents and Carers
- Legal Aspects
- Vaccine Storage
- Vaccine Administration
Vaccine-Preventable Disease Modules
In addition to the core modules, delegates must complete the vaccine-preventable disease modules relevant to the vaccines they will be administering in practice.
The relevant modules may include:
- Influenza
- Shingles
- COVID-19
- Pneumococcal disease
- Pertussis
- Diphtheria
- Tetanus
- Polio
- Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib)
- Meningitis
- Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR)
- Rotavirus
- Hepatitis B
- Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), where applicable
General Practice Nurses should complete all vaccine-preventable disease modules, including those relating to the routine childhood immunisation programme.
Other vaccinators who will not be administering childhood vaccines are not required to complete modules relating to vaccines outside the scope of their role.
However, delegates are encouraged to develop a broad understanding of vaccine-preventable diseases covered by UKHSA guidance, as this represents good practice and supports safe, informed vaccination delivery.
2. Live Interactive Online Training
Following completion of the required e-learning, delegates will attend a full-day interactive virtual training session via Microsoft Teams.
The session will consolidate and build upon the knowledge gained through the e-learning and provide an opportunity for discussion, questions, case-based learning and the sharing of best practice.
Key areas covered will include:
- Why we vaccinate and how vaccines work
- Consent and the use of PGDs and PSDs
- Vaccine ordering, storage, handling and cold-chain incidents
- Vaccination during pregnancy
- Vaccine administration and injection technique
- Adverse events following immunisation
- Vaccination of individuals with underlying medical conditions
- Addressing vaccine concerns and supporting informed decision-making
- Vaccine-preventable diseases
- The childhood and adolescent immunisation programme
- NHS travel vaccination schedules
- Sharing best practice in immunisation and vaccination delivery
The emphasis throughout the session will be on the safe, effective and evidence-based delivery of immunisation services within Primary Care.
3. Knowledge Assessment
Following the live training session, delegates will be required to complete a knowledge assessment quiz via Microsoft Forms.
A minimum score of 80% is required to successfully complete the knowledge assessment.
Delegates will also be asked to complete a post-training questionnaire to provide feedback on the programme.
Successful completion of the required elements will enable delegates to receive a certificate of completion.
4. Practical Competency Assessment
Completion of the online training does not, in itself, confirm practical competency.
Following the course, delegates must complete the Vaccinator Competency Assessment Tool in their practice setting.
A clinical supervisor must observe and assess the delegate’s practice and confirm that they are competent to deliver vaccinations safely and effectively.
The supervisor must be a registered healthcare practitioner who is competent and experienced in delivering immunisation programmes.
Delegates should therefore ensure that an appropriate clinical supervisor is identified before undertaking the training, so that the competency assessment can be completed following the course.
