Training: 10 Steps to working with people and communities

Event placeholder

Working with people and communities is one of the most important ways we can ensure that the NHS meets the needs of patients and the public. By engaging with people in meaningful discussion of the collective challenges we face, and of how to overcome these, we can tap into the diverse experiences, insights and ideas that patients and the public bring.

This course presents the well-established 10 Steps model that sets out what must be considered when developing engagement plans and building partnerships with people and communities. It is aimed at staff from any NHS organisation, and will suit people with little or no formal experience in engagement work, and people who want to build on previous experience.  If you are working outside the NHS, but are still interested in taking part, get in touch with us and we may be able to accommodate you.

By the end of the session you will:

  • Better understand what drives participation and where greater understanding can support your work in partnership with people and communities.
  • Explore good practice, key approaches and engagement tools used to build participation.
  • Understand participation and engagement in relation to health inequalities and look at strategies to build inclusion of seldom heard communities.
  • Use real examples to develop an engagement plan applying 10 steps and identifying resources and support available.
  • The real examples used are brought by participants – providing an excellent opportunity to develop a plan or project through the applying the 10 Steps.

This training is very interactive. We recognise that things can arise unexpectedly, but when signing up for 10 Steps, please ensure your calendar is free for the whole of the session. This will help you and other participants to get the most from the session.
