Mental Health in Primary Care

Event placeholder

This session is designed for anyone working clinically in primary care who encounters mental health presentations as part of everyday practice.

Mental health difficulties are common, complex, and often intertwined with physical health, social stressors, and life events. In primary care, we are uniquely placed to notice early signs, open meaningful conversations, and offer timely, compassionate support.

Using a primary care–relevant case study, this session will focus on normalising mental health, exploring how distress commonly presents in primary care settings, and introducing formulation as a practical framework for making sense of people’s difficulties beyond diagnosis alone.

The session will introduce the 5 Ps formulation model (presenting, predisposing, precipitating, perpetuating and protective factors) as a shared language for understanding mental health problems collaboratively with patients. We will consider how formulation can guide clinical decision-making, risk awareness, and proportionate intervention in a time-limited primary care context.

Participants will explore realistic support options within primary care, including brief interventions, psychoeducation, social prescribing, medication considerations, referral pathways, and safety-netting. The emphasis throughout is on confidence, curiosity, and relational practice rather than “fixing” or over-pathologising distress.

This session aims to support clinicians to feel more confident having mental health conversations, to think holistically, and to recognise the valuable role primary care plays in mental health support.

This is an interactive session and you will be expected to interact. Please ensure you have a camera and microphone available to attend the meeting.

You will receive a certificate post training for your attendance. Places are limited, if you have booked a place, please ensure you attend.
