SUMMARY:Introduction to Immunisation and Vaccinations Training Foundation
DESCRIPTION:Immunisation and Vaccination Foundation\n\n\nBlended Learning Programme for Primary Care Staff in Lancashire and South Cumbria \n\nThe Immunisation and Vaccination Foundation is a comprehensive blended learning programme designed for Primary Care staff who are new to delivering immunisation and vaccination services.\nThe programme incorporates both all the vaccines included in the routine immunisation schedules as advised by UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). It has been designed to  provide delegates with the knowledge\, skills and practical competence required to deliver vaccinations safely and effectively.\n\nIn line with the UKHSA National Minimum Standards and Core Curriculum for Immunisation Training for Registered Healthcare Practitioners (2025)\, comprehensive foundation training is required for those new to immunisation. Our programme adopts a blended approach\, combining self-directed e-learning\, live interactive training\, knowledge assessment and supervised competency assessment in practice. \n\nThe Programme Consists of Four Parts\n\nSelf-directed e-learning – completion of the relevant e-learning modules available through e-Learning for Healthcare (e-LfH).\nLive interactive online training – a full-day virtual training session delivered via Microsoft Teams.\nKnowledge assessment – completion of a Microsoft Forms assessment\, with a required pass mark of 80% or above.\nPractical competency assessment – completion of the competency assessment in practice\, supervised and signed off by an appropriately qualified and experienced clinical supervisor.\n\n\n1. Self-Directed E-Learning\nDelegates are required to complete the relevant e-LfH modules before attending the live online training session.\nPlease ensure that you have allocated sufficient protected time within your working diary to complete the e-learning. Based on feedback from previous delegates\, the e-learning takes approximately seven hours to complete.\nThe programme is free to access; you will simply need to register for an e-LfH account.\ne-Learning for Healthcare – Immunisation and Vaccination Programme:\nhttps://portal.e-lfh.org.uk/myElearning/Index?HierarchyId=0_39333&programmeId=39333Core Modules \n\nAll delegates should complete the following core modules:\n\nImmunology\nCommunicating with Patients\, Parents and Carers\nLegal Aspects\nVaccine Storage\nVaccine Administration\n\n\nVaccine-Preventable Disease Modules\nIn addition to the core modules\, delegates must complete the vaccine-preventable disease modules relevant to the vaccines they will be administering in practice.\nThe relevant modules may include:\n\nInfluenza\nShingles\nCOVID-19\nPneumococcal disease\nPertussis\nDiphtheria\nTetanus\nPolio\nHaemophilus influenzae type b (Hib)\nMeningitis\nMeasles\, Mumps and Rubella (MMR)\nRotavirus\nHepatitis B\nRespiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)\, where applicable\n\n\nGeneral Practice Nurses should complete all vaccine-preventable disease modules\, including those relating to the routine childhood immunisation programme.\nOther vaccinators who will not be administering childhood vaccines are not required to complete modules relating to vaccines outside the scope of their role.\n\nHowever\, delegates are encouraged to develop a broad understanding of vaccine-preventable diseases covered by UKHSA guidance\, as this represents good practice and supports safe\, informed vaccination delivery. \n\n2. Live Interactive Online Training\nFollowing completion of the required e-learning\, delegates will attend a full-day interactive virtual training session via Microsoft Teams.\n\nThe session will consolidate and build upon the knowledge gained through the e-learning and provide an opportunity for discussion\, questions\, case-based learning and the sharing of best practice. \n\nKey areas covered will include:\n\nWhy we vaccinate and how vaccines work\nConsent and the use of PGDs and PSDs\nVaccine ordering\, storage\, handling and cold-chain incidents\nVaccination during pregnancy\nVaccine administration and injection technique\nAdverse events following immunisation\nVaccination of individuals with underlying medical conditions\nAddressing vaccine concerns and supporting informed decision-making\nVaccine-preventable diseases\nThe childhood and adolescent immunisation programme\nNHS travel vaccination schedules\nSharing best practice in immunisation and vaccination delivery\n\n\n\nThe emphasis throughout the session will be on the safe\, effective and evidence-based delivery of immunisation services within Primary Care. \n\n3. Knowledge Assessment\nFollowing the live training session\, delegates will be required to complete a knowledge assessment quiz via Microsoft Forms.\nA minimum score of 80% is required to successfully complete the knowledge assessment.\nDelegates will also be asked to complete a post-training questionnaire to provide feedback on the programme.\n\nSuccessful completion of the required elements will enable delegates to receive a certificate of completion. \n\n4. Practical Competency Assessment\nCompletion of the online training does not\, in itself\, confirm practical competency.\nFollowing the course\, delegates must complete the Vaccinator Competency Assessment Tool in their practice setting.\nA clinical supervisor must observe and assess the delegate’s practice and confirm that they are competent to deliver vaccinations safely and effectively.\nThe supervisor must be a registered healthcare practitioner who is competent and experienced in delivering immunisation programmes.\n\nDelegates should therefore ensure that an appropriate clinical supervisor is identified before undertaking the training\, so that the competency assessment can be completed following the course. \n\nThe relevant resources include:\n\nUKHSA_National_Minimum_Standards_for_immunisation_training_2025.pdf\nAppendix A Vaccinator competency assessment tool workbook\n\n\nImportant Information for Non-Registered Healthcare Professionals\nBefore booking onto this programme\, please ensure that you meet the relevant entry requirements.\nNon-registered healthcare professionals undertaking vaccination training should have:\n\nEducation and training to Level 3 of the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF)\, or an equivalent qualification in England and Wales; and\nAt least two years’ experience\, in line with the recommendations within the National Minimum Standards.\n\n\nImportant: Additional Mandatory Training\nPlease note that this Immunisation and Vaccination Foundation programme does not include Anaphylaxis or Basic Life Support (BLS) training.\n\nThese areas must be completed separately in accordance with your employer’s requirements and current national guidance. \n\nBefore You Attend\nPlease ensure that you:\n\nHave allocated sufficient protected time to complete the required e-learning (approximately seven hours).\nHave completed the relevant core and vaccine-preventable disease modules before attending the live session.\nHave identified a suitable clinical supervisor within your practice.\nAre familiar with the competency assessment requirements.\nHave completed any separate training required for Anaphylaxis and Basic Life Support.\n\n\nThis blended learning programme is designed to provide a structured foundation for those new to immunisation and vaccination\, supporting delegates to develop the knowledge\, confidence and practical competence required to deliver safe\, effective and high-quality vaccination services within Primary Care. \n\nThis is an interactive session and you will be expected to interact. Please ensure you have a camera and microphone available to attend the meeting.\n\n\nYou will receive a certificate post training for your attendance. Places are limited\, if you have booked a place\, please ensure you attend.\nIf you have any additional needs or requirements to attend this session\, please contact us at mbpcc.lscthub@nhs.net\nBy signing up you agree for your information to be stored and shared by the Training Hub and with the Training Provider\, NHSE and NHS ICB\, for the delivery of this training\, monitoring\, reporting and certification purposes only.
