SUMMARY:Microaggressions and allyship: EDI Skill Development Sessions
DESCRIPTION:The Development\, Change and Transition team are pleased to announce Equality\, Diversity and Inclusion Skill Development Sessions. Following the success of these sessions in the Delivery and Operations directorates\, these sessions are now available to all staff in NHS England. These sessions will increase our confidence in identifying non-inclusive practices and taking steps to create a more inclusive NHS England\, and also help us foster good relations between our colleagues. \nMicroaggressions and allyship \nWhat do we mean by microaggressions and how do they manifest in the workplace? Allyship\, privilege\, what allyship means to different people. This session includes guest speakers from NHS England\, sharing their lived experiences of microaggressions. How can we move from being a bystander to an ally? How do we increase our confidence in speaking up when we witness microaggressions? This session touches specifically on gender\, race and other marginalised communities too. \nFeedback from Previous Participants \n\n“Powerful\, relatable\, personal stories that illustrated microaggressions are even more widespread than I had thought”\n“I liked the phrase in one video in that it is OK to not understand\, but take time to find out.”\n“I learnt a lot about how diverse the LGBTQ+ community is and I found this really reassuring in terms of feeling equipped to think about and talk about this topic.”\n\nQuestions and Reasonable Adjustments \nThese sessions will run online on Microsoft Teams. Please e-mail england.inclusion-events@nhs.net if you have any questions or to tell us how we can support you in participating in the sessions.

SUMMARY:UCLan Primary care education meetings - Evidence-based medical education
DESCRIPTION:Enhance your teaching skills in primary care with our tailored education meetings\, blending theory and practice to refine clinical teaching skills.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrimary Care Education Meetings are designed for both current and prospective placement providers\, as well as clinicians within the primary care sector. This series of concise Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is tailored to enrich and broaden the skill sets of practitioners involved in teaching students in the medical field. \nWe are accustomed to supporting our clinical decisions with evidence and would like to do the same for our teaching practice. However\, the evidence base for medical education is much weaker. In our fifth and final meeting\, we look at why this is so and discuss the kind of evidence we most urgently need in education.

SUMMARY:APM Thames Valley: Demystifying digital accessibility
DESCRIPTION:What is digital accessibility? (Spoiler: it’s making sure we design and develop websites\, systems\, and digital content and experiences which are accessible by everyone – including disabled users.) \nWe’ll take a look at the principles behind it and why it’s vital (and often overlooked) in today’s organisations. We’ll think about how it can benefit staff\, clients and customers\, and how ensuring best practice in digital accessibility can act as a strong foundation to help to foster an inclusive and diverse organisational culture. We’ll also consider the practical challenges which are faced when embedding best practice in digital accessibility into ways of working\, and how applying change management principles can provide an effective toolkit for approaching and assisting with this. \nThe Equality Act (2010) broadly protects certain characteristics\, including the rights of disabled people so that everyone can have equal access to participate in society. This includes online and digital spaces\, and it’s therefore vital to make sure that our organisations\, services\, digital content\, and ways of working are set up in the right way to accommodate the needs of a diverse audience so that everyone can feel included and engaged. This includes considering best practice in a wide range of contexts – from the documents you make and use\, the websites you build\, the development cycles you follow\, to the IT solutions you procure\, and the online meetings you host. Good digital accessibility is more than just meeting our legal obligations\, it’s the right thing to do. Without an inclusive approach\, you could be at risk of excluding people\, whether that’s team members\, or potential customers. \nThere are principles\, standards\, and best practice which we need to follow\, and these can often take a certain amount of time\, effort\, and expertise to interpret\, but you don’t have to be an expert to get to grips with the basics. The journey to becoming more accessible is exactly\, that – a journey rather than a quick fix. There are ways in which you can embed good digital accessibility into ways of working sustainably and effectively by following small steps to ensure the change management process is as smooth as possible.

SUMMARY:FFP3 Mask Fit Testing at Blackpool Victoria Hospital (30-minute slots)
DESCRIPTION:Victoria Hospital\nWhinney Heys Road Blackpool FY3 8NR \nWith an outbreak of measles anticipated in the coming weeks\, it is essential that any clinical staff have access to the correct PPE. Measles is highly contagious and is transmitted via airborne transmission and therefore any clinician seeing suspected or confirmed measles needs to wear appropriate PPE\, including the FFP3 mask. It is an HSE legal requirement that FFP3 masks are correctly fit tested. This applies to all\, regardless of vaccination status as we have seen breakthrough infections with clinical staff in earlier outbreaks. Those who have had no MMR doses and those who are immunosuppressed are most vulnerable and should be prioritised for FFP3 fit testing or\, better\, deployed away from risk of communicable disease. Vulnerable groups include unvaccinated individuals\, pregnant women\, immunocompromised patients and the chronically ill. \nBlackpool Teaching Hospitals has set up sessions on Tuesday 19 March. A number of 30-minute slots are available to book. \nPrimary care staff must take their own FFP3 masks to the fit testing session\, and are encouraged to order FFP3 masks from the PPE portal (call 0800 876 6802 if you do not already have an account). They are free of charge to order. \nFacial hair – stubble and beards – make it impossible to get a good seal of the mask to the face. If you are clean-shaven when wearing FFP3 masks this will help prevent leakage of contaminated air around the edges of the mask and into your lungs. If there are good reasons for having a beard (eg for religious reasons)\, alternative forms of RPE\, that do not rely on a tight fit to the face\, are available (powered hoods) If powered hoods are purchased by practices it is important that decontamination process is in place. \nThe testing will take place in the portacabin in the car park at Blackpool Victoria Hospital\, Whinney Heys Road\, Blackpool\, FY3 8NR. \nAttendees are able to park directly outside for the duration of their booked session. \nThese initial sessions will be available on a first come\, first served basis. Lancashire & South Cumbria ICB continues to work on providing further opportunities across the footprint to get staff fit tested. \nPlease contact SVOC (healthierlsc.svoc-info.c19vacc@nhs.net) if you require any further assistance.

SUMMARY:Failure Demand Webinar
DESCRIPTION:An opportunity to explore in more detail the issue of failure demand\, first introduced as a concept in Webinar I.  A contentious term\, failure demand is not the failure of individuals\, but rather failures within our systems and processes which lead to duplication. This duplication ties up capacity and results in poor experience for the patient. In this webinar we look at practice examples\, how to find and reduce them.  Before attending this session\, participants should attend webinars I and II\, to be familiar with the theory of Demand\, Capacity and Variation and how to collect and review data at practice level. \n\nThe sessions are provided for those in General Practice and Primary Care Networks.\nThe sessions are delivered by experienced Primary Care Transformation Team faculty members\, comprising practice-based clinicians and non-clinicians and improvement experts who have worked extensively with general practice and wider primary care. \nRegistration for each session will close two working days before the webinar or earlier if oversubscribed. \nEnquiries: england.capabilitypct@nhs.net \nWatch this short film by Dr Mark Gillam on Demand and Capacity: https://twitter.com/NHS_ICB/status/1450108235344719875

SUMMARY:PAM (Patient Activation Measure)Workshop 2.5hr – Virtual via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Patient activation describes the knowledge\, skills and confidence a person has in managing their own health and care. \nThere are twenty places available per each virtual PAM workshop.\nPlease ensure you are able to join from an individual computer/laptop terminal and have a working camera and microphone. \nTo apply for a place please fill out this PAM Training Application Form in full and send to: workforcetraining@activelancashire.org.uk \nOnce all delegates have been registered on a PAM Workshop a confirmation e-mail will be sent to you inc your Zoom Link.\nPlease note all applications are registered on a first come\, first serve basis. \nOnce the workshop has been completed PAM outputs/Flourish info’s will then be sent to all participants who have completed the course in full.\nPlease note that registration on to Flourish is not automatic after completion of a PAM workshop. Some colleagues will benefit from using Flourish for PAM calculator use within their roles. If you wish to access the Flourish System for PAM use\, please contact: workforcetraining@activelancashire.org.uk to request this after you have completed your PAM workshop session. \nThe PAM workshops are being delivered by Lancashire & South Cumbria ICB & Active Lancashire for the benefit of Lancashire & South Cumbria population\, to assist people to become more active in their own health and care. \n  \nWhat is Patient Activation?\n It is widely acknowledged that people who have the knowledge\, skills and confidence to manage their own health tend to have better health outcomes than those that may have a more passive approach. Patients/clients with high levels of activation usually understand their role in the care process and feel capable of fulfilling that role.\nPeople who have low levels of activation are usually less likely to play an active role in staying healthy. They are less good at seeking help when they need it\, or at following advice given by healthcare professionals or managing their health when they are no longer being treated. If we want clients/patients to take ownership of their health and care we have to make them part of the process. \n\nWe need to listen\, problem-solve\, and collaborate\nWe need to help them gain the skills and confidence they need\, not just the transfer of information.\n\nVarious studies show that targeted interventions can help increase patient activation. Least activated patients/clients can make the most gains when they are appropriately supported. Tailoring interventions to individual needs\, significantly increases the likelihood that people will adopt behaviours that contribute to better health. \nThe Patient Activation Measure (PAM) is a validated patient-reported outcome measure owned by Insignia Health.\nPAM was created to identify which patients/clients may need additional resources to manage their health. \nThe PAM tool is made up of 13 questions\, which assesses a patient’s knowledge\, skills and confidence in managing their health. Answers provide a score on a scale from 0 to 100. PAM scores between 1 and 99 are considered to be valid responses and allow any respondents to be categorised into one of four defined levels\, ranging from level 1 (patients who do not actively contribute to their healthcare) to level 4 (patients who are proactive in managing their health and engage in healthy behaviours) which in turn determine the person’s ‘activation’ score on a level of 1\, 2\, 3 or 4. \n Measuring activation can: \n\nImprove outcomes and reduce costs\nReduce re-admissions and fewer episodes of unplanned and emergency care\nImprove patient experience\n\nUsing PAM to tailor support for people with long-term conditions \nThe rising demand for healthcare services\, a large proportion of which is due to the growing population of people with long-term conditions\, has led to a need to manage the increasing pressure placed on primary and secondary care. \nAdults with a long-term condition(s) can report the lowest level of PAM\, and may feel overwhelmed by their condition(s). Supported patient self-management is a widely used strategy for trying to address the challenges of managing long-term conditions and multi-morbidity\, including helping patients to change lifestyle behaviours and to learn core skills\, such as responding to symptoms\, managing medicine\, improving diet\, increasing exercise\, stopping smoking\, and managing interactions with professionals. People who can achieve this are described as ‘informed or activated clients/patients’. Self-efficacy (a sense of control over actions and outcomes) has been noted to be a key driver. \nWhy would more activated clients/patients tend to use less healthcare? \n\nThey may be better engaged in the ongoing management of their condition(s)\, consequently their need for healthcare to manage deterioration in their condition is reduced compared with less activated clients/ patients\nClients/patients may also be better equipped to co-ordinate their care\, leading to fewer missed general practice and outpatient appointments.\n\nPAM FLYER – MAY – DEC 2024 \nWhat is the Patient Activation Measure (PAM) 2024
